International Touring & Performance Collaborations

Makhampom’s international performance collaborations began with friends from Germany in the early 1990s. A performance tour of Germany and other parts of Europe in 1993-4 was the start of numerous exchanges and tours throughout Asia and beyond. Since this time, Makhampom has toured Europe, USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Cambodia, been part of collaborations with artists from Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Australia, and the USA, and hosted artists from all of these countries and more.

The collaborations and international tours are a rich part of Makhampom’s tapestry, sparking ideas such as the Theatre Lab, Study Tour, Makhampom Studio, and circus project, and bringing skills and techniques in physical theatre, puppetry, circus, clown, contemporary dance, hip hop, percussion, mask theatre, and vocal technique to the group. And Makhampom has likewise shared its experience in performance, from traditional to contemporary and its various styles and interpretations in between.

In 2008, Makhampom performed the production, Mahajanok – Never Say Die, at the ASSITEJ International Festival of Theatre for Young People in Adelaide, and across southern Australia. Makhampom’s contemporary likay, The Message was performed in Cambodia. And in 2009, we welcome Jonathon Newman and two Australian actors, who are international slapstick and stage combat professionals, for The Displaced collaboration, in support of displaced refugee and hill-tribe communities (April/May). Later in the year, we take our likay troupe to Japan and Korea for regional festivals. And in 2010, Makhampom celebrates its 30th Anniversary with a series of events, including a reunion of international friends in a collection of small performance collaborations.
