Makhampom’s refugee program
Working with youth theatre troupes in 3 refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border using theatre for popular communication on legal aid, gender based violence, and adolescent reproductive health and training facilitators in dispute settlement in partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Conflict Resolution Manual & Training
Writing a user manual on Makhampom’s participatory theatre-based conflict resolution techniques, studying the conflict in the Deep South of Thailand, and conducting training workshops for peace workers 

Performance Touring in Hong Kong (IDEA), Korea (ASSITEJ), Japan , and Germany
  • Mahajanok – Never Say Die, a performance combining Thai mask dance-drama and physical narrative theatre, drawing on the Buddhist take of Mahajanok, bringing the themes of perseverance, trauma, and struggle in the Deep South, tsunami-affected communities, and refugee camps. (Hong Kong & Korea – July)
  • Naga Wong, a likay (folk opera) performance, revised from the collaboration between Cambodian, Laos , and Thai artists in 2005, telling the story of the Naga (serpent) in creating the Mekong River and peoples of the region ( Japan – September)
  • The Giant that Stole the Children’s Voices, a comic physical, visual theatre performance performed by the Chiang Dao youth theatre group, based on the piece devised by the 2006 Mid-year Study Tour group, reflecting on the theme of young people having no voice in the community (Germany – September).

Study Tours
Our annual study tour programs, based in Chiang Dao, with international participants joining with the Makhampom team and Chiang Dao community in 2-3 weeks of theatre, training, community activities, performance, sightseeing, and play, held in June-July and December, with a Japanese Study Tour being launched in September           

Theatre Lab
With seeding funding from the Australia-Thai Institute, the theatre lab will run from late-October into early November, training in the traditional Thai theatre and Makhampom’s inter-cultural theatre method, culminating in performance at the Bangkok Theatre Festival

International Volunteers
In April, a Canadian theatre student will join us, with two theatre workers from Australia on a 3 month Asialink residency from June, and a refugee worker starting a 1 year AVI program with her husband in July

  • Hilltribe community project
    Developing community support and development programs with marginalised dalaang and pakyaw villages in Chiang Dao district
  • Youth Theatre Troupe
    Building up the youth theatre troupe in Chiang Dao, including a performance tour in Germany as part of the Childrens Cultural Caravan
  • Schools Storytelling & Reading Project
    Activities in 9 schools introducing Makhampom’s work through storytelling and a creating reading project
  • Community Playgrounds
    Building community playgrounds in Tung Luk village and Makhampom Centre as a collaboration of Australian volunteers, Makhampom, and the local community
