14-day intensive theatre laboratory training in Thai theatre and
intercultural performance at the Makhampom Living Theatre in Chiang
Dao in the north of Thailand, culminating in performance at the
Bangkok Theatre Festival

The
Theatre Laboratory will run in 3 Units:
1.
Likay
–
Thailand
’s traditional popular folk theatre (4 days)
An
introduction to the vocal forms, verse composition, character types,
movement and gesture standards, and clowning and improvisation aspects
of likay
2.
Intercultural
Theatre (4 days)
Workshops
in (i) “Let the Body Talk” movement-based text, (ii) image
theatre, (iii) ensemble movement and sound improvisation, (iv)
environmental theatre, and (v) multi-lingual dramaturgy
3.
Theatre
Devising (3 days)
(i)
thematic and performance research process, (ii) group devised scenario
making, (iii) simultaneous dramaturgy
4.
Performance
at the Bangkok Theatre Festival (2 Production Teams)
travel
to
Bangkok
and performance at the opening weekend of the festival (www.lakorn.org)
The
Theatre Laboratory will also include seminar presentation and provide
theoretical resources and activity documentation.
The
Makhampom Trainers are Pradit Prasartthong, Pongjit Saphakhun, and
Richard Barber with a team of support facilitators.
Pradit
(Tua) Prasartthong
(m) is Makhampom’s artistic director, an internationally-renowned
facilitator, director, dancer, actor, and dramaturg, renowned for his
work in the fusion of traditional and contemporary theatre styles. He
was recently awarded as
Thailand
’s leading national contemporary performing artist.
Pongjit
(Jon) Saphakhun
(f) is coordinator of the Makhampom Living Theatre and Makhampom’s
leading actress. She specialises in physical theatre, with training in
Thai classical, folk, and popular forms. In 1997 she studied at the
John
Bolton
Theatre
School
in
Melbourne
. She is the dynamic trainer in Makhampom.
Richard
Barber
(m) trained with the Melbourne-based physical music theatre company,
Gonghouse, for six years, developing skills in ensemble music, design,
physical performance, and group devising. He has worked in
intercultural theatre in
Asia
for 15 years, currently completing a PhD in Performance Studies at
Monash Uni.

75 km north of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand and Bangkok Theatre
Festival, Bangkok
Who
Should Come?
-
Performers,
actors, directors, dramaturges, dancers with performance
experience and an interest in ensemble performance, inter-cultural
theatre, or Thai or Asian theatre.

There
are a minimum 5 and maximum 10 places available for international
participants, with another 10 places allocated for Thai
participants.

There
are five half scholarships provided by the Australian Thailand
Institute available to Australian participants.
